“Dramatic Escape” is the 20th film in the popular Community Matters series, a partnership between the Westchester Community Foundation and the Jacob Burns Film Center that aims to provide a forum for civil, civic dialogue on difficult topics. The film transports viewers into the lives of maximum-security prisoners and their transforming experience in the Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA) program at Sing Sing Correctional Facility in Ossining. In the film, the prisoners are attempting to mount a stage production of the hit movie “A Few Good Men.” The film provides viewers an intimate look at this process as it traces the prisoners’ steps from auditions through their curtain call. Through creative expression in theater, dance, voice, writing, and visual art, the RTA program gives the men the opportunity to learn social and cognitive skills that act as a springboard to education, family reconciliation, and ultimately, successful re-integration into community life. Along the way, the men reveal their personal stories, their everyday struggles, and contemplate whether redemption is possible.
A post-film panel discussion will take place with Katherine Vockins, Executive Director of Rehabilitation Through the Arts, and Laura Rossi, Executive Director of the Westchester Community Foundation. A reception will follow upstairs in the Jane Peck Gallery.
