150 Pounds of Candy, from Port Chester to the Middle East

Kids send their leftover Halloween candy to deployed troops, while the JV Cheerleading squad celebrates a first-place finish.



One hundred and fifty pounds. That's a lot of Skittles, Twizzlers and candy bars.

Kids and parents in the  did right by their country -- and their waistlines -- when they collected their leftover Halloween candy, piled it into big, sturdy boxes, and shipped it off to American troops serving abroad.

For the effort, the school partnered with Operation Gratitude, a non-profit that sends care packages to deployed military members. The group's website has a care package counter, and as of this morning, Operation Gratitude had send 581,785 boxes overseas. Volunteers can start their own local efforts, and troops can log on to request care packages online.

An Auspicious Start for JV Cheerleaders

Port Chester's took home first-place honors in their first meet this year at the Nov. 14 Tuckahoe Competition.

Students, teachers, parents and lots of supporters are  this morning to celebrate John F. Kennedy Magnet School's .

Only 300 schools in the nation are recognized each year by the federal program, which recognizes excellence in education.
