Complexities Slow Down Move to Dissolve Town of Rye

The fate of Rye Neck has become an issue.

While the move to dissolve the Town of Rye continues, the future of Rye Neck has become an issue.

Rye Neck, which is mostly located in Village of Mamaroneck, is considered part of the Town of Rye with Port Chester and Rye Brook, but what would happen to Rye Neck without the town is a bit of mystery.

The Journal News reports that Port Chester and Rye Brook would become independent without the Town of Rye essentially acting as a parent. But Rye Neck’s fate is up in the air, in part because of the longstanding belief that villages need towns in order to exist in New York.

According to Assemblyman Steve Otis, who has researched the issue, writes The Journal News, such a state law about towns and villages does not exist. But that does not immediately answer the question of Rye Neck, and additionally, not everyone is on-board for dissolving the town in part because Rye Neck’s fate remains up in the air.
