One Killed, Another Injured After Minivan Strikes Two Pedestrians
Police said the two men were struck on Westchester Avenue on Friday night.
An unidentified man was killed late Friday night after he was struck by a minivan on Westchester Avenue, Port Chester police said.
The victim, who did not have identification, is believed to be an undocumented immigrant. Detectives are trying to track down people in town who may have known the man, Capt. John Telesca said.
A second victim, 19-year-old Freddy Avales of Port Chester, was struck by the same minivan. Avales was brought to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla for treatment, but his injuries weren't believed to be life-threatening.
The driver, a 65-year-old Port Chester man, hasn't been charged. Telesca said it appears the victim "stepped out from behind a parked vehicle and walked right into the path" of the minivan.
Officers were called to Westchester Avenue between Pearl and Poningo streets at 9:30 p.m., where they found Avales laying on the ground in the eastbound lane with two people attending him, while the other victim was laying in the road about 40 feet away in the westbound lane with "an extremely serious head injury." The unidentified man was losing blood rapidly, Telesca said.
Paramedics responded and brought the unidentified victim to Greenwich Hospital in Connecticut, where he was pronounced dead an hour later.
County police dispatched an accident investigation team to the scene, and Port Chester police are awaiting autopsy reports on the deceased victim. The investigation is continuing and police hope to learn more details about the victim and the circumstances of the crash.
