Serious Questions Lead to Serious Faith, Sunday, May 3, 10:30am
Sunday morning worship service at First Baptist Church of White Plains

Do you have doubts about God? Do you acknowledge the created order of the universe but have questions about the goodness of such a God who has fashioned it all? Do you hold lingering doubts about the resurrection of a poor, peasant, Palestinian Jewish carpenter who was criminally executed nearly 2,000 years ago? You’re not alone.
For nearly all of that time, the disciple Thomas has been scorned as “Doubting Thomas” by preachers throughout the world. But was Thomas a person and model of faithlessness? No, I believe we have Thomas all wrong. Thomas missed the resurrection of Easter and all he is asking for is to have a similar experience as the other disciples. I can imagine him thinking, “What did I do wrong? Why did Jesus not show himself to me?”
The relationship between doubt and faith that Thomas models for us is that our doubts will accept no cheap substitute! Jesus is not afraid of our doubts, our questions, our pain. He enters in, meeting Thomas where he is and then he gives magnificent expression to his joy, “My Lord and my God!” Maybe Thomas isn’t such a doubter… maybe he’s us… maybe he’s you.

Maybe Thomas is giving us permission to be honest and refuse to accept anything less than our Saving God. Come as you are and bring your questions, creating a space where we can discover together the profound and powerful ways in which God encounters us. Because serious questions lead to serious faith.
