Abandoned Boat Goes Up In Flames
Firefighters battle boat fire in wooded area off North Bicycle Path in Port Jefferson Station
Firefighters from the Port Jefferson Fire Department responded a reported brush fire while on a standby assignment for the Terryville Fire Department on Saturday July 26, 2014. Port Jefferson Fire Department third assistant chief Todd Stumpf & a crew from Port Jefferson Fire Department Engine Co. #3 responded from Port Jefferson Fire Department Headquarters. Terryville Fire Department communications reported the fire to be to the rear of Comsewogue High School on North Bicycle Path. While en route, further information was received from Suffolk County Police Department that the best access would be in the Liberty Mutual complex located at 1500 Route 112. Upon arrival of Port Jefferson Fire Department third assistant chief a heavy column of black smoke was visible to the rear of the complex. Upon further investigation, it was determined that an abandoned boat was burning in the woods. Chief Stumpf immediately requested additional assistance from Port Jefferson & Terryville Fire Departments for brush trucks to respond. The Brookhaven Town Fire Marshal’s Office was notified and is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
