Elizabeth the Queen: The Life of a Modern Monarch by Sally Bedell Smith.

While Queen Elizabeth herself never gives personal interviews, author Bedell-Smith was able to interview over 200 of her close friends and associates to get a better picture of Queen Elizabeth II. As a young woman who was passionate about horses and her beloved corgis, she was thrown into the role of queen after the early death of her father. She has been far from perfect as both a mother and queen, and this biography does not gloss over her mistakes. Queen Elizabeth may be a queen, but she is still human and this book reminds readers of that fact.
