April is the beginning of much celebration in the Children’s & Teen Services Department at CPL.
On April 12th we will be celebrating National ‘DEAR’ Day. DEAR stands for Drop Everything And Read! National ‘DEAR’ Day is a special reading celebration to remind and encourage families to make reading together on a daily basis a priority. National ‘DEAR’ Day falls on Beverly Cleary’s birthday. Beginning next week, view our display in the Children’s Department honoring Beverly Cleary, pick out a book recommended by your CPL librarians, then ‘Drop Everything and Read’! Click here to browse books written by Beverly Cleary in our online catalog. Place your reserves with any Suffolk County library card.
April 14th through the 20th is National Library Week. Children of all ages and students through grade 12 are invited to celebrate with us by entering our Create a Bookmark Contest. Click here to download an entry form and start creating a special bookmark today! Bookmark designs should depict illustrations of an original slogan about reading or books, something from a favorite book (the story, the characters, the pictures, etc.) or why you love the library. All entries must be submitted by Wednesday, April 24th and entrants must be Comsewogue Library cardholders. Check the Children’s Corner blog and Teen Scene blog on May 1st to view the winning designs. Winning bookmarks will be reproduced and made available in the Children’s & Teen Services Department for a limited time, beginning May 1st.

And if these two celebrations were not enough, April 30th is El Día De Los Niños! Día is a multicultural celebration EVERY DAY of children, families, and reading that culminates each year on April 30th. The celebration emphasizes the importance of advocating literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds. So, stop by the library with your child at the end of April and help them develop an appreciation for different cultures and a love of reading. Together, you can browse our foreign language collection and choose a book from our special Día display.
In addition, registration for children’s and teen programs in May will begin April 23rd-25th. View our online Newsletter for full details. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Children’s & Teen Services Department by telephone at 631-928-1212 or by email at comsjref@suffolk.lib.ny.us.
