Services for Seniors at the Port Jefferson Free Library

The Port Jefferson Free Library offers a variety of programs of services for and about the interests and needs of seniors. Stop in and see what we can do for you!

Are you a senior or retiree? Know someone, a friend or family member who falls into those categories? Stop into the Port Jefferson Free Library and take advantage of the many programs and services that are on offer for seniors and retirees.

Many programs directly address the financial, physical, and social needs of seniors. Check out some of the great upcoming programs:

Senior Advocate from the Suffolk County Department of Aging Wednesday, April 17 3:00 - 5:00 PM

Tax Help for Seniors The Library provides assistance for seniors with the preparation of their income tax returns. Help will be available Wednesdays, 10:00 AM- 2:00 PM, February 6 - April 10. Call 473-0022 and ask for the Reference desk  to make an appointment. Please bring last year’s return and all pertinent paperwork.

Being retired means that your schedule has become a lot more flexible. Drop into to the Library for some fun programming. Learn how to paint, do Yoga, join a book group, or stop in for our Friday Movie Matinees! Check our newsletter for our latest programs on offer here.

While many things improve with age, unfortunately eyesight is not always one of them. The Library offers options to keep everyone reading! Check out titles from our extensive Large Print Collection. Copies of the newest bestsellers are available as well as many fiction favorites. Browse the collection in the front Reading Room! The Library also has many large print non-fiction titles. They can be found interfiled within the regular non-fiction collection in the stacks. Just look for the red and white “Large Print” sticker on the spine.

Want to listen to a great book? Explore the Library’s excellent collection of fiction and non fiction audio book titles. They can all be found the mezzanine level.

For those whose vision loss does not allow them to use regular books or even audio books, there is an alternative. Individuals can apply for home delivery of Talking Books or braille books. All delivery arrangements are handled through the Andrew Heiskell Library, (New York Public Library). Please note to qualify for this service individuals must be certified by a doctor. The required forms can be printed out here (PDF).

Looking for local information of interest to seniors? Stop by our Senior information display on the brick wall to the left when you enter the Library. It is behind the security gate. Lots of information about Medicare, local services, Meals on Wheels, and other information pertinent to seniors can be found there. Of special interest are the discounts sheets for shopping and transport. Pick one up and see where you can save!
