Summer Reading Program Winding Down

Port Jefferson Free Library Children's Summer Reading Program Ending

This summer, as usual, the Children's Department has been a buzzing hive of activity.

Over 750 children, aged from birth to 12 years old, signed up to be part of the Summer Reading Program, Dream Big-READ!, earning prizes for reading throughout the two-month long program. The littlest ones (our Pre-Readers) listened to stories read by parents, grandparents, older siblings and caregivers.

We even had a weekly Book Buddies program, during which teenagers earned community service credit for reading to our preschoolers. The New Readers choose materials from our Easy Reader and Intermediate shelves and Readers from our Fiction and Non Fiction areas. In addition to the at-home reading the children did, we had a myriad of activities for them here at the Library, ranging from live animal presentations, crafts, food preparation (and consuming!), story times, book discussions and music/movement programs.

The program ends Thursday, August 16 with a Magic Show presented by Jester Jim at 1 PM under the tent in the Library's parking lot. All who participated in the SRP are invited, no registration required.

Also under the tent, Wednesday evening, August 15, we will be showing the newly released feature film Dr.Seuss' The Lorax.  The movie will begin at 6:30 p.m. and registration is not required.

As for the next few weeks of summer before school starts, we still have a full schedule of events planned for our young patrons. Please check our program calendar for specifics.
