“Yes, we do that!”: Things You Didn’t Know About the Port Jefferson Free Library

Your library card is the “Smartest Card in Your Wallet”, so give it a work out!

The Port Jefferson Free Library can do more than just provide you with a great selection of books, movies, music,and programs. Here are some things you might not know that we offer:

1. Home Delivery- Are you homebound either temporarily or permanently? Everyone deserves to have the full use of their library. Give us your wish list, and your books or other materials will be dropped off. Let us know when you are finished ,and they will be picked up and returned. For more information about this service, please call 473-0022 and ask to speak with Mr. Maggio.

2. Want to read a book....in another language? We can get that for you. While Spanish titles are among some of the most numerous offerings other languages are represented including, French, Italian, Chinese, German, and more. Stop by the Reference Desk and ask about what is available in the language of your choice. We’ll help you find what you need and have the books sent to the PJFL and you can check them out with us. Don’t forget we have a great selection of foreign language films.

3. Check it out with us...return it to any Suffolk County library. We are always glad to see our patrons both when they pick up materials or return them, but we know that sometimes the Library can be a bit out of the way for you. Do you have another Suffolk County Library near your job or someplace you visit frequently? You can always return PJFL materials at any Suffolk County library, and they will send them back to us.

4. Looking for something not presently available in any Suffolk County library? Tell us what you would like, and we’ll fill out a purchase request form. Just make your suggestion at any of our reference desks and the Librarian will pass it on to the person who is in charge ordering that type of item. We can’t guarantee that everything will be purchased, but the Librarians make every effort to meet patrons’ requests.

5. Want to read a book, watch a movie, or listen to some music, but our copy is checked out or is an item we just don’t own? You can go online to have your choice sent from another library via Interlibrary loan. Patrons can easily search the county catalog: http://alpha2.suffolk.lib.ny.us/ Placing a hold is easy. Once you’ve found the item you want, click the “Request”- it is indicated by a red check mark with “Request” . When prompted, type in your Library Card barcode and your password. From the pulldown menu that appears on the next page select “Port Jefferson” as your “pick up” location. (It should be the default setting so in all likelihood you will not have to change it) and click “Submit”. When your item arrives in Port Jefferson, you will be notified via email or by phone call. We ask that you please pick up your items within one week,or they will be returned. If you don’t have computer access, any of the librarians would be happy to help you.
