Police Rescue Pair From Burning Boat

Suffolk Police Marine Bureau officers came to the rescue Sunday afternoon after a boat went up in flames in the Long Island Sound, police said. 

According to police, officers Matt Funaro and Dave Goldstein, aboard Marine Delta, were dispatched after a 911 caller reported a boat fire approximately four miles north of Port Jefferson Harbor, shortly before 2 p.m. 

When officers located the boat, a 40-foot Formula 400 SS, the boat’s two occupants were at the bow of the boat and there were flames and heavy smoke emanating from the stern, police said. 

The officers assisted the occupants, Cary Cieciuch, 50, and Kevin Totora, 42, both of Stratford, Conn., aboard Marine Delta. 

Funaro and Goldstein administered oxygen to Totora and transported the men to shore, police said. 

Once on shore, Cieciuch and Tortora were both treated for smoke inhalation by personnel from the Port Jefferson Volunteer Ambulance, police said. 

Port Jefferson firefighters, assisted by members of the Mount Sinai and Setauket fire departments, extinguished the fire, police said. 

Sea Tow, a commercial marine towing company, towed the boat to shore, police said.
