Port Jefferson Trio Swim To State-Level Success

The Earl L. Vandermeulen High School student-athletes recently placed at a state-level swimming and diving championship.

PORT JEFFERSON, NY — Three Earl L. Vandermeulen High School swimmers recently placed at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s swimming and diving championships, according to the school district.

Senior Kyra Sommerstad was the Suffolk County champion in the 200-yard Individual Medley and the 100-yard backstroke. At the state championship, she finished first in the 200-yard IM and second in the 100-yard backstroke.

Sophomore Kate Sommerstad finished seventh at the state championships in the 500-yard freestyle and 21st in the 200-yard freestyle.

Freshman Olivia Schlegel qualified for the 100-yard backstroke and swam her best time of the season at the NYSPHSAA championships.
