A Day at The Diamond to Strike Out Cancer

Support the athletes on Saturday as they raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society.

Some Port Washington athletes are doing their part on Saturday to help fight cancer.

Port Washington Softball and Baseball teams are hosting a Day at the Diamond – Strike Out Cancer, a full-day tournament from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Guggenheim Elementary School Fields. The event's purpose is to raise awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society.

There will be softball and baseball games throughout the day. And at 3:30 p.m., the Superintendent of Port Washington Schools Dr. Kathy Mooney will throw out the first pitch for the Port Varsity Baseball game.

The day also features a brief speech from an American Cancer Society representative and Relay for Life event co-Chairs will be on-site with Relay and ACS educational materials and information about the upcoming Relay for Life event at Schreiber Track on June 15. Learn more.

"We are proud of our coaches for promoting cancer education and awareness all year long to their athletes," said Lee Anne Vetrone-Timothy, a Relay for Life Port Washington co-chair, who added that she's also a "proud Port baseball mom."

"This event truly puts words into action, showing by example how a person, a team, an event can make a difference. What a great lesson for our children  – and all of us," she said.

"On June 15th, Relay for Life will pay tribute to these Coaches-who-Care at the opening ceremonies on the Schreiber track," she said. "Come cheer for them!"
