A New Om Sweet Om

Yoga studio relocates near Main Street with several upgrades.

A new year means a new home for Om Sweet Om.  The yoga studio is set to reopen on Jan. 2, 2010, at 12 Irma Ave., directly off Main Street, after seven years near the Terrace neighborhood. The new facility takes over the space that housed Johnny G's gym.

For the first time, Om Sweet Om will offer clients shower and locker facilities, as well as separate bathrooms for men and women. Studio co-owners Gail Grossman and Lisa Bondy hope the expanded dressing facilities coupled with the one-block proximity to the Long Island Rail Road will attract commuters. "We have a 6 a.m. class that appeals to working women and men, and we'll consider adding a 7 a.m. class if demand warrants it," Grossman said.

The new space also offers increased parking, in both a dedicated on-site lot and with on-street parking. Tensions with neighbors over on-street parking in the largely residential neighborhood where the studio was formerly located played a role in the decision to find new space. The new location is commercially zoned and on a block with several businesses, including Alper's Hardware and Sweet Comfort Bakery & Cafe.

"We are so well-supported by the Port Washington community," Bondy said. "Almost a hundred people walk through our door each day. We are excited to be more centrally located in the community. Hopefully Main Street will be positively affected by our presence."

Om Sweet Om will continue to offer babysitting in a dedicated kids room, a yoga boutique of apparel and props, and alternative wellness services such as chiropractic wellness, massage therapy, Reiki, pranic healing and acupuncture. However, the studio's Transition Café & Tea Bar will not be part of the new facility.
