This past November, hundreds of High School Seniors across the country signed National Letters of Intent to fulfill their dreams of playing collegiate sports. Amongst this prestigious group was 7 members of Friends of Port Rowing, a non-profit community rowing organization located in Port Washington, NY.

Friends of Port Rowing began in 2011 with the mission to create an inclusive rowing experience for teenagers and adults. Since then, Port Rowing has supported many student athletes in their pursuit to take their love for the sport to the next level.

“We all recognize how much discipline and commitment is required to be successful in the sport of rowing,” says Boys Head Coach Aaron Bosgang. “The true value in the sport comes from the life-lessons learned, the habits formed, and the friends that become family along the way. The fact that our athletes are able to continue this journey beyond Port Rowing is a privilege and speaks to the power this sport has to impact our lives.”

Olivia Burke joined Port Rowing in October of 2022 as a junior in high school, without any prior experience in the sport. “My older brother rowed at Chaminade and then Colgate. He suggested my sister and I try it out,” explains Olivia, who attends Garden City High School. “We didn’t know anyone on the team at first, but everyone welcomed us with open arms.”

By July of 2023, Olivia had verbally committed to UCLA. “Rowing has become an integral part of my life and I love the friends I’ve made with Port Rowing. I feel so lucky to be able to expand my personal rowing community and compete for a Division I program!”

Port Rowing offers rowing programs for Middle School and High School students year round, and Learn to Row camps to children and adults during the Summer. To learn more about Port Rowing visit www.portrowing.org
