Port Washington's John J. Daly Elementary School Hosts African Dance and Drum Troupe

Port Washington, New York (December 2018)—Port Washington Union Free School District’s (PWUFSD) John J. Daly Elementary School recently hosted the African Dance and Drum Troupe for two assemblies, offering students a glimpse into another culture from around the world. The interactive and energetic assembly followed a presentation about African culture, lifestyles and customs.

“As an educator, it is extremely important to expose students to other cultures not only to educate them, but to encourage tolerance as well,” said Dr. Kathleen Mooney, Superintendent of Port Washington Union Free School District. “This assembly is a great way to showcase another culture, while also involving our students with the interactive and fun aspect of dancing and drumming. These types of educational experiences bring learning to life, engaging our students in a way that supports their inquisitiveness and creativity.”

The African Dance and Drum Troupe is from Senegal, bringing their culture and talents to schools around America. The troupe has been coming to the U.S. from Senegal for eight years. In addition to introducing American students to their African heritage, the African Dance and Drum Troupe brings a message of unity and celebration of diversity, which ties into the district’s year-long theme of kindness and unity.
