Don’t Neglect Life-Saving Mammography Screenings

While any day of any month is a good time to have a mammogram, since October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, it brings the topic front and center. Perhaps because at this time of the year people are more aware of the need to get annual breast cancer screenings, reservations for a recent Mammography Van event in Port Washington sponsored by Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton filled up quickly. The screenings were free for uninsured or with a co-payment for those with insurance.

The exams are provided by Nassau County University Medical Center staff in their “Mammo Van,” which visits communities across Nassau County to provide mammographies to women 40 years of age or older.

So many have survived breast cancer because of early detection through mammograms. “I can’t urge people enough to have annual mammograms,” Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton said. “Everyone’s lives are very hectic, but there is no reason to put off this potentially life-saving exam that is easy and fast.”
