Experienced Knitters/Crocheters Sought for Yarn Arms Around Port

Volunteers without sewing experience also needed for community-wide public art project that celebrates trees and Earth Month

More volunteer help is needed for “Yarn Arms Around Port,” a community-wide public art project that will decorate up to 50 local trees on Main Street, PW, with "yarn arms" — lovingly crocheted arms that will literally hug the trees. The project, spearheaded by fiber artist Allison White in partnership with Residents Forward, is already well in progress. Installation is planned in time for April in celebration of Earth Month.

Numerous volunteers have already created 500 "granny squares" that will be used to create the "arms" of the yarn arms. Now, experienced crocheters and knitters are needed to help create the "hands" from a charted pattern that can be completed in single crochet or garter stitch. 100% worsted weight acrylic yarn in skin-tone colors will be supplied if needed. Yarn and a copy of the chart can be picked up at your convenience or delivery arranged. Completed crocheted or knit hands would then need to be dropped off in the lobby of the Port Washington Public Library no later than March 1 (the sooner the better!).

Volunteers — high schoolers or adults, no sewing experience required — are also needed to help connect the granny squares with the "hands" at in-person sessions at the Library on any of the following dates and times:

The squares and "hands" are joined using a crochet hook or a tapestry needle and no prior experience is necessary. If you already have a pair of scissors, or a crochet hook or tapestry needle, please bring them but we will have extras as well.
