Game Day Fundraiser A Success
The Port Washington baseball team and coaches combine efforts to raise more than $3,000 for the program.
Score: Elementary School Parents/Teachers 14, Middle/High School Parents/Teachers 6
The Heroes: Varsity squad Head Coach Matt Holzer and JV Head Coach Phil Spotteck were clearly the stars in this contest – and event – although they only played one inning in the field apiece. That was probably because they were the two who put together the contests, prizes and games.
The Turning Point: The sun was shining in the bottom of the first inning when the middle and high school parents and teachers came out with a 4-0 lead. The elementary school squad struggled behind until the bottom of the third when they finally got the advantage and made the score 9-4. And the rest was history.

The Quote: "Great day, great game, great sportsmanship," seventh grade teacher and umpire Stephen Shackel said. "Everybody pitched in a nice community event and hopefully the baseball team raised some funds to do what they want to with the kids because Holzer and Spotteck are really putting their hearts and souls into this."
The Bottom Line: In the end, it wasn't about the score or competition, it was about having a good time at a community event and supporting the baseball program. The game was a blowout from the beginning, but that didn't matter. Parents and their children stuck around to watch the teams compete all the way until the last inning and claim prizes. An iPod Touch was raffled off towards the end of the event, as were five Port Washington baseball t-shirts. The baseball facilities were also upgraded. The event's flyer advertised "New Dugouts, Team Banner, Bullpen, PA System, Batting Cage, & Backstop" as reasons for showing up.
