Port Washington Girls Soccer Wins Opener

The Hero: Junior Emily Rosenthal was selected as captain of the Port Washington girls soccer team. She led with her play on Thursday, scoring both goals for the Vikings on breakaway opportunities due to her speed and agility. The Valley Stream North couldn't deal with the Vikings attack, and that's why Port Washington pulled away with a win its season opener.

The Turning Point: In the first five minutes, Port Washington and Valley Stream North were neck and neck, competing for loose balls and corner kicks. But after that, it was clear the Vikings could win this matchup. And they did so convincingly. 

The Quote: "We tied [Valley Stream North] last year once and beat them once," coach Lauren Bishar said before the game. "We lost a couple girls, but we added a few sophomores. Should be a pretty good game so, we'll see how it goes." Midway through the second half, it was clear the Vikings carried over the successful play from last season.

The Bottom Line: The game was called towards the end of the second half due to rain, but the Vikings were awarded the game anyway. "If a game has finished a half when the contest is called, the result is final," one official explained. In the end, it was Port Washington's stellar defense that allowed sophomore goalie Sara Marinelli to avoid any tricky saves. The midfield was also top-notch with sophomore Gabby Meyer leading the way. But of course, none of that would equate to a win without captain Emily Rosenthal's two balls in the back of the net.

Key Stat: The Vikings allowed just four shots on goal the entire match.
