Port Washington, your parking fees just got more expensive for the first time in approximately 15 years.

The North Hempstead Town Board passed a plan to increase parking rates in Port Washington following a Tuesday night hearing.

Anyone who parks in the Port Washington Parking District can expect the following increases:

  • Daily parking vouchers will increase from $1 to $2
  • Monthly parking vouchers will increase from $20 to $30
  • Parking meter rates will increase from .25 cents per hour to .25 cents per half hour

The fee for registering cars, which is separate from the annual parking fee, will also change to:

  • $25 for the first car
  • $45 for the second car
  • $150 for the third car

The Town says they hope these changes will encourage more residents to purchase the $240 annual parking pass.

These new fees will keep Port Washington in line with other parking districts on Long Island. Check out a list here to compare hourly parking meter rates in other Long Island municipalities to Port Washington’s rates.

How do some residents feel about the issue? A few locals commented on Patch’s article, “Port Washington Looks to Increase Parking Fees:”

  • LongTimeObserver said, “Meter rates were just recently increased. Not to mention 'convenience fees' imposed. Both punitive to local merchants. Yet Manhasset has no street parking charges. Hmmm......”
  • BarbNak said, “This will just motivate me to shop a the bigger stores/restaurants out of town that have free parking. If you are trying to encourage small businesses and in town shopping this is not the way to do it. Having to constantly run out to feed the meter while eating/ shopping/ having your hair or nails done is annoying to say the least. What wonderful benefits will the town bestow on me with the revenue generated by this increase besides the privilege of parking while I patronize town shops?!”
