Lady Vikings Lacrosse Loses in Class A Semifinal

Farmingdale's big first half too much for Schreiber to overcome in county semis.

The fifth-seeded Schreiber Lady Vikings were 15-0-1 heading into Tuesday's semifinal matchup with the top-seeded Farmingdale Lady Dalers. But their dream season came to an end as Farmingdale took down the Lady Vikings by a score of 20-8.

Junior captain Jackie Froccaro got things started with a goal just over a minute into the game to give Schreiber its only lead of the day at 1-0. But it was all down hill after Froccaro's goal.

The Lady Dalers responded with an unbelievable 12 straight goals in 12 minutes of play, and led 15-2 at halftime.

"We showed up in the second half," Schreiber head coach Raqual Piraino said after the Vikings' only loss this season. "I think they just capitalized off a lot of our mistakes in the first half."

Farmingdale junior attacker Kyra Ochwat had seven goals, all of which came in the first half, and senior Melanie Raso had six goals and seven assists to lead all players with 13 points. Lady Dalers' goalie Alexandra Gurecki made 13 saves, including several big stops in the first half to keep the Lady Vikings out of the game early.

The second half saw the Lady Vikings improve their play significantly, and they outscored Farmingdale, 6-5, as a result. Unfortunately, their second half effort was far from enough. Schreiber junior captain Alexa Froccaro scored four goals in the second half to cut the lead down to 16-6, but that was as close as the Lady Vikings would get on this afternoon.

Despite letting in a season-high 20 goals, Lady Vikings' goalie Samantha Tilts never let up and made a season-high 17 saves in the loss.

"She played as good as she could," Piraino said of her goalie. "Of course, as a coach, you're always going to look for what to improve on. I think she should have taken a little more time on her clears, but other than that I think she came up big."

Jackie Froccaro finished with two goals, while her cousin Alexa finished with five goals and two assists.

The loss certainly isn't the way the Lady Vikings wanted their incredible season to end, but with much of their core returning next season — including the Froccaros, Tilts, and sophomore Christina Commons — the future is something the team should be very excited about.

"I think the future is bright," Piraino added. "We only have three starters that are graduating, so it's about rebuilding. It's a learning lesson. For most of them it's playoffs and their first semifinal game. We have to keep working hard for next season."

If this season was any indicator of the future, then a Conference III championship is just the start of something special for the Schreiber Lady Vikings.
