Local Girl Scout Troop Earns Flower Badges at Amaranthus on Main

St. Peter's Girl Scout Troop 421 earns legacy flower badges at local flower shop, Amaranthus on Main.

Girl Scout Troop 421 is always looking for fun and creative ways to earn new badges. Last Thursday, January 22, 2015, the group of girls visited local flower shop Amaranthus on Main so they could earn their legacy flower badges. Amaranthus on Main is a new floral and event design shop located at 162 Main Street in Port Washington. The shop’s new owner, Amy Ventura, is a Port Washington resident who is a former Girl Scout and a former Girl Scout Troop Leader, so she know the importance of inviting troops to visit small businesses. “Owning my own flower shop has always been a dream of mine,” says Amy. “I love that I can share my passion with these young girls and show them that through hard work and dedication, they can achieve their goals-- whatever they may be.” Amy and her former co-leader were always looking for good examples in the community to inspire their troop. She is thrilled that she can now be the one who provides a fun and interesting outing for Girl Scout troops.

When the St. Peter’s fourth graders arrived at Amaranthus, they were overjoyed to explore the cooler filled with flowers. They asked questions about all of the different flowers: their names, where they were grown and how to take care of them. Then, it was time for the girls to design. All of the Girl Scouts were given baskets that they could fill with their own unique arrangements. They all used the same kinds of flowers: roses, chrysanthemums, lemon leaves, wax flowers and asters; however, their arrangements were all wonderfully different. Each Girl Scout used her own creativity and imagination to design something beautiful.

When the entire troop was finished, the girls received their badges. Their troop leaders, Mary Byrnes and Janine Whitting, explained that each Girl Scout received a legacy flower badge because she followed all of the steps in designing an arrangement and learned more about flowers. The troop also learned some of the basics about running a small business. Amy and her staff at Amaranthus were proud that the girls were walking away from the shop with a new knowledge of flowers, an understanding of how a flower shop works and their own creations. Two of the Girls Scouts event told their mother that when they grow up, they hope to have flower shops of their own.
