Longtime Port Washington Community Leader to Be Honored by League of Women Voters

Debbie Shichtman has been an active member of the community for the past 46 years.

A longtime Port Washington resident and community leader will be honored by for her many years of public service by the League of Women Voters of Port Washington-Manhasset next week.

Debbie Shichtman has been an active member of the community for the past 46 years. She has served as president of the LWV of Great Neck, co-President of the LWV of Nassau County, on the Board of the LWV of New York State and now serves on the Board of the LWV of Port Washington-Manhasset.

In addition to her involvement with the LWV, Shichtman devotes her time to supporting gifted and disadvantaged children and is an environmental activist. She recently headed a protest that helped prevent the construction of a garbage facility adjacent to the protected marshland in Hempstead Harbor and also helped organize a petition in support of a Water Compact on Long Island.

Shichtman was previously honored for her public service in 2003 by the Town of North Hempstead. She was placed on the Women’s Roll of Honor.

  • Secretary of the Great Neck/Manhasset Community Child Care Partnership
  • Member of the National Society of Gifted and Talented Children
  • Helped institute programs for gifted children in Nassau and Suffolk schools.
