'Make A Child Smile' Toy, Food Drive a Success for Port Children in Need

"The response from the community has been overwhelming," Police Detective Anthony Guzzello said.

More than 500 toys were collected for Port Washington children in need during the community’s seventeenth annual “Make A Child Smile” food drive.

Members of the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce joined forces with Police Detective Anthony Guzzello to collect donations of nonperishable food and new, unwrapped toys.

Thirty businesses offered to be drop-off locations for the toys and donations.

Guzzello created this program 25 years ago along with the Port Washington Police Benevolent Association and the Port Washington Fire Department. “The response from the community has been overwhelming,” he said. “Over 500 toys plus food and monetary donations were collected to brighten the holidays for the less fortunate children in Port Washington.”

Chamber co-president Mitch Schwartz said he was proud of the support the Port businesses and residents put into the drive. Some local store owners took toys off their shelves to add to the donations brought in by Port residents. Schwartz pledged the participation of the Chamber again next year. “Every child deserves some special happiness during the holidays,” he said.
