Manorhaven Students Learn About Food Allergies
Port Washington's Manorhaven Elementary School Celebrates Food Allergy Awareness Week

Port Washington (October 2018)In honor of Food Allergy Awareness Week, the Port Washington Union Free School District’s Manorhaven Elementary School recently hosted Kyle Dine “The Allergy Guy,” a musical education specialist. Dine uses music, puppets and games to help teach students about food allergies and safety. Students were taught about the symptoms of allergy attacks, what to do if someone is having an allergic reaction and the different types of foods that people can often be allergic to, including nuts, fish and eggs. Dine’s use of music and puppets as a teaching tool helped to keep students’ attention while providing an entertaining learning experience. Students also took home refresher materials to share with parents.

Another initiative undertaken in support of Food Allergy Awareness Week at Manorhaven Elementary School was the Teal Pumpkin Project. Teal pumpkins were placed outside the front doors of the building, in support of a safer, happier Halloween for all kids. Teal painted pumpkins promote inclusion for students with food allergies or other conditions. Participating in Food Allergy Awareness Week is one of the initiatives of the district focused on teaching students about healthy lifestyles and food safety. Learning about these real-life issues is information students will use throughout their lives.
