Mini-Camp Options for August

There are plenty of sports programs offered in August.

Traditional six- to eight-week summer sports camps aren't for everyone. Fortunately, there are plenty of  programs in Port Washington that still have openings,  giving children some fun options for August.

Parents of athletic youngsters ages three to eight might consider The Little Gym, in the Soundview Shopping Center. This outfit bills itself as a place where children can enjoy non-competitive programs designed to build motor skills while also building emotional, intellectual and social skills. An additional draw here is the gym's flexible scheduling plan, allowing children to attend for a single week, once a week, or other possible combinations.  It costs sixty dollars for three-hour class, but the price decreases for children enrolled in additional classes.

There are spots available on two Police Athletic League summer softball teams for girls ages 10 and 12 .  Rob Elkins, who coaches the team, said, "Girls that play sports tend to get better grades, have a better body image, and are healthier.  Beyond those benefits, a true team builds a sense of community and spirit that is almost impossible to get elsewhere."  It costs $145 to join plus some additional fees. The girls practice at least once a week and also attend various tournaments throughout the summer.

Unlimited Sports Action is featuring its "Shooting Stars Outdoor Summer Basketball Camp" on weekday evenings  for children six to 12. The program is offered in one-week sessions at $125 each with a second class offered at half-price.

For those looking to escape the heat, check out Port Washington Skating Center, which offers ice skating lessons on Wednesday afternoons and Tuesday and Thursday evenings for $15.00 a lesson, with discounts for frequent skaters available.

These kinds of programs can provide families with the kind of flexibility they need to add a bit of structure to their lives while still enjoying the freedom of summer.
