The monument was unveiled Sunday by Kyle DiLeo who built the structure for his Eagle Scout project.

Members of the community joined first responders in the unveiling of a new 9/11 memorial honoring Port Washington residents who died in the line of duty on Sept. 11, 2001.

The monument was unveiled by Kyle DiLeo who built the structure for his Eagle Scout project.

The remembrance ceremony was hosted by the Port Washington Fire Department on Sunday at Manorhaven Village Hall.

“As time goes on—it’s nearly 15 years since 9/11, it is important to remember that each of those people had a story and a family that made them unique and that creating this memorial in Manorhaven to remember local 9/11 victims was critical,” said Port Authority Executive Director Pat Foye.

Foye was joined by Port Authority Police Department Honor Guards in remembrance of Port Authority Police Department member Antonio Rodrigues, a resident of Port Washington.

The monument honored Rodrigues along with all the Port Washington residents who were killed in the attacks at the World Trade Center.

Rodrigues’ widow and children, Sarah and Adam, were in attendance. Rodrigues, who grew up in Mozambique and Portugal, was an artist and loved his family.

“Everyone should go and see the 9/11 Museum which is a fitting commemoration of the losses and sacrifices that day but Eagle Scout DiLeo’s memorial will remind all of us in Port Washington of the events that day and the lasting effects on the people of Port Washington,” Foye said.
