New Year Brings A Win to Girls Bowling

Girls defeat Great Neck South.

Fresh off a win over Manhasset in girls bowling on Monday, the continued their streak with a 3-0 victory against Great Neck South on Wednesday at Herrill Lanes. They are holding second place in Conference 1 with just two weeks before the season ends. 

After an opening 514-422 victory, the Vikings went on to win the final two games, 493-410 and 400-397. All told, Port Washington scored 1407 to Great Neck South's 1229.

Hero: Sophomore Emma Zorfass, the team's top scorer, bowled a 177 in the second set.

Turning Point: Port Washington started off strong, and Zorfass and her teammates Caitlin Tali, Caitlin Whittaker, and Melissa Kennedy kept up the pressure throughout the match. However, while they maintained the lead, their scores decreased with each set.

Quotable: "The Lady Vikings' progress has been tremendous because they are bowling more frequently and with consistency," said Coach Kevin Braddish. "Having more experienced bowlers who also bowl with their family and friends helps too."

Bottom Line: The Vikings have a blend of experienced and novice bowlers but all are equally dedicated. Zorfass, who is slated to bowl again next season, said "Coach Braddish is great and encourages all the girls to bowl their best every time." 

Key Stat: With an average of 140, Zorfass has been a member of the team for four years, and has bowled in leagues at Herrill Lanes since age seven.
