North Hempstead Honors Manorhaven Red Devils

The  was honored by North Hempstead officials at a Town Hall reception.

They were recognized for , with a score of 182 points. The team practices at  in the summer. 

“The Red Devils Swim Team did something extraordinary,” said Supervisor Kaiman. “It takes the commitment, dedication and courage as well as the support of parents, teachers, coaches and mentors.  Today we recognize all of you.”

“I am happy to have the opportunity to recognize this team,” Councilwoman Dina De Giorgio said. “I look forward to seeing the plaque hanging in at the Manorhaven Beach Park pool complex,” in reference to the certificate of recognition, achievement, and appreciation awarded to the team by the Town Board.

In the weeks leading up to the final competition at Eisenhower Park Pool, the Red Devils swam against teams from Wantagh, Veterans Memorial, East Meadow, Forest City, Lynbrook and Clinton G. Martin.  Their only loss was to Lynbrook.  The finals required swimming in all styles, the breast stroke, back stroke, butterfly and freestyle, as well as in the relays, medleys, and freestyle.

 “The team has worked extremely hard,” said Christine Shaub, the team liaison and mother of three team members.  Noting that the youngsters have to train at Manorhaven Pool by 6 a.m. five days a week, Shaub said, “It’s great that the Town is honoring them.  It’s inspiring for them to know that their hard work did not go unnoticed.”

The Red Devils have a long and accomplished history, Shaub stated.  The team was first formed in 1972.  A number of the current coaches even swam on the team, she said.

The team of more than 100 youngsters, most of them Port Washington residents, compete according to age and gender and are split into four groups: eight and under; 9-10; 11-12; and 13 and over.
