PORT WASHINGTON, NEW YORK (NOVEMBER 2020)—A group of male teachers in Port Washington’s Carrie Palmer Weber Middle School are putting the fun in fundraising this month with their participation in No-Shave November, an initiative that donates money that’s typically spent on shaving and grooming to educate about cancer prevention, save lives, and aid those fighting a cancer battle.

The team of teachers collectively halted the shaving of their facial hair on October 31, 2020 and now two weeks in, their beards are “growing” strong. The initiative—spearheaded by one of Weber’s eighth grade social studies teachers, Mr. Thomas Barbara—serves as a conversation starter among those in the building, and outside, to spread awareness. This year, all the money raised for No-Shave November will be donated to Cohen Children’s Medical Center, one of the top pediatric hospitals in the country, in time for the holiday season.

Cohen Children’s Medical Center, a 202-bed hospital that opened in 1983, is designed exclusively for children. Through its innovative care and breakthroughs, CCMC treats patients across many disciplines of medicine. Cohen’s serves 1.8 million children in Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk counties, as well as children from around the country whose families bring them to Cohen Children’s Medical Center for its specialized care.
