Port Washington Boys Soccer Drops to 0-2

Manhasset's opening minute goal sinks Vikings in rain-shortened non-league game.

Score: Manhasset 1, Port Washington 0

Records: Manhasset 1-1; Port Washington 0-2

The Hero: Junior defender Ioannis Lambadarios' indirect kick in the opening minute of the game turned out to be a big one for the Manhasset Indians. Indians midfielder Spyros Siafakas got off a quick pass which Lambadarios struck from 25 yards out into the lower right corner past Port Washington goalie Michael Moraitis. While the game was well-balanced, it was Lambadarios who won the game for Manhasset.

The Turning Point: While Lamadarios' goal was the decider, the turning point came 10 minutes into the second half when the game was called due to severe thunderstorms. The Port Washington Vikings were beginning to gain some momentum and senior forward Ari Schickler had nearly beaten the Manhasset defense twice right before the game was called. "I wouldn't be surprised if we played a full game and we had put in two or three [goals] and we'd be going home 3-1 winners right now," said Vikings coach Don Fish.

The Quote: "We left one guy open on that goal," Fish said. "That first minute wasn't pretty. … We need to show up a little more focused and ready to play."

The Bottom Line: Opening minute aside, the Vikings looked stronger on the field today. Moraitis is as calm as can be in goal and stopped five shots including a point-blank rocket from eight yards out early in the second half. Senior sweeper Nicholas Autz and senior left defender Jordan Spechler led the way for the Vikings in the backfield. Juniors Joshua Weinberg and Arjan Saraon also helped break up several of Manhasset's rushes. But all it takes is one goal to win a game. The rain did not help the Vikings' cause, but they came out slow and the Indians capitalized on it.

Key Stat: The Vikings have surrendered a goal in the opening 10 minutes of both games this season.
