Port Washington Boys Soccer Falls To Farmingdale

Young Vikings no match for experienced Farmingdale squad in season-opening road loss.

Score: Farmingdale 3, Port Washington 0

Records: Farmingdale 1-0-1; Port Washington 0-1

The Hero: Victor Montano was unstoppable up front for the Farmingdale Dalers on Tuesday. The senior forward started the scoring just 10 minutes into the game by placing a gorgeous through ball from teammate Fabricio Bustillo past Port Washington goalie Michael Moriatis. Montano netted his second goal after senior midfielder Josue Aceituno dribbled down the wing and found Montano on a diving header from about seven yards out.

The Turning Point: While Farmingdale dominated the first half, it was still in reach for the Port Washington Vikings until Montano's perfectly timed diving header with just under five minutes left in the half. The goal took most of the steam out of the Vikings heading into the half.

The Quote: "We were definitely a little nervous for the first 10 minutes," said Port Washington coach Don Fish. "I think that athletically we were a little overmatched . . . I think we're going to be competitive with everybody else we play."

The Bottom Line: In his first season as coach, Fish still has to work out his starting lineup. All of his players saw action Tuesday but the youthful Vikings, who started just two seniors, had their hands full on both sides of the ball. Montano, Bustillo, and senior midfielder Austin Wertheimer set the pace on offense for the Dalers and were a nonstop threat in the first half. Senior defender Nicholas Aust broke up several plays early on to keep the Vikings in the game and Moriatis, a sophomore, controlled the box and made several big saves throughout the game. In the end, the size, physicality, and experience of Farmingdale proved to be too much for Port Washington.

Key Stat: Port Washington registered just one shot on goal in the first half.
