
Trying to stay alive in the playoff hunt behind Plainview and and Baldwin, Port Washington enjoyed a little home cooking on the baseball diamond against the 1-10 Herricks High School. Port defeated Herricks 4-3 on Monday at the playing field.
In the third inning Port's Nick Duarte walked with one out. Wayne Baker came up next and drove in Duarte by hitting a triple. Then with two outs in the inning Mike Weiss hit a single to drive in Baker. In the fourth inning Danny Kaminsky and Nick Duarte both walked to start the inning.
Heroes: Max Mancher earned the win. He threw six innings, gave up four hits, struck out four and did not walk a single batter.

Turning Point: Wayne Baker followed with a bases clearing double to push the score to 4-0. Herricks then cut the lead to 4-3 with first and third and two outs in the seventh when Port's Tim Costello got the pop out to him to end the game and earn the save.
Quotables: “It was a very important win because it keeps us in the hunt for the final playoff spot,” said Coach Holzer. “We won with good pitching and timely hitting,” he said.

Bottom Line: Port Washington needs to win against the same team they beat on Monday. They can do it Tuesday afternoon. A strong momentum after a hard earned win, and good coaching, can make that a reality.
