5 Minutes Across The Counter With Dyan Rachel Radler:
What is your name? Tell us about your business
- My name is Dylan Rachel Radler and I am a recent college graduate in my mid 20's. Although I work a steady 9-5 job, I am overwhelmed by student loan debt and have been considering taking on a second job. I don't have the time to commit to another hourly position with another company, so I started to think about my strengths and how I could utilize those strengths to start my own business. I then realized that I am an incredibly organized person, and that my desk and office look much more organized than the average working person, specifically in comparison to my coworkers desks which are overwhelmed with mounds of paperwork. I then had a realization that most people are not capable or don't have the time to organize, and over time this can result in missed payments, piles of paperwork, and missing files/ documents due to the crowding of unorganized paperwork and computer files. Using "Organize Your Bizz", clients would be contracting me to come into their home office or Long Island business to help to de-clutter & digitize paperwork, create a custom calendar to better manage meetings and bills, organize computer files, and provide support work with clerical tasks and projects. Think of it as "the Uber of Administrative Assistants".
How did you get your first start in business?
- My first star in business was when I was hired as the Administrative Assistant of The Safe Center LI. After 6 months with the agency I was promoted to Executive Assistant where I found my passion for management. I will be going for my MBA in Management at LIU Post in the fall.
Is this your first business venture? What other projects have you worked on?
- This will be my very first business venture all my own. I have worked on fundraising projects where I have put together and managed fundraising teams for various organizations such as Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, No Kid Hungry, and Cycle for Survival.
What’s the best business advice you’ve ever received?
- The best business advice I have ever received was from the Dean of Molloy College's student enrollment of their MBA program. He said that "99% of jobs are not posted on the internet and you have to network to find out about them". I found this to be incredibly valuable information because I was solely relying on websites like Indeed and Craiglist for jobs. He motivated me to get more involved in Networking with local business women.
How long have you lived or done business here?
- I grew up in Port Washington but am currently residing in Hicksville. I lived in Port Washington for 25 years and feel most comfortable starting my business out of there due to my connections and knowledge about the town, local businesses. I actually managed a business in Port Washington for 3 years.
What’s your favorite part about being a business in the area? What makes the area special?
- I think Port Washington is a very special town because it is essentially it's own "bubble". It feels like a world outside of the rest of Nassau County, and was an incredibly beautiful place to grow up. I know that the local businesses struggle to stay afloat and I feel passionate about offering assistance to those businesses that are struggling to get ahead or need to focus their energy on other aspects of the business rather than paperwork and organizational tasks.
Did anyone influence you as a business owner? How?
- Various people have influenced me in taking this risk to start my own business. Of all the influences, I have to say that my cousin Rori Alter has really influenced me in starting my own business by providing me with guidance as a business owner herself.
Did you ever make a business mistake and later on were glad you made it?
- In my role at my full time job I have made mistakes along the way, but I feel that every mistake has an underlying lesson and is an opportunity to learn and grow.
Tell us something about yourself that people may not know.
- Cleaning and Organizing is a way for me to decompress and can be therapeutic for me. I enjoy tasks that require me to be hyper-focused and I also love to help people.
What advice would you give to a business owner just starting out?
- Since I am the business owner just starting out, I will give myself some advice... "the minute you start to feel comfortable, it's time to make a change!"
