Port Washington Student Performs with Lang Lang

Amy Suwannatat took part in the piano virtuoso's recent '101 Pianists' event at Tilles Center.

A Port Washington student was one of the young musicians to perform with piano virtuoso Lang Lang at his “101 Pianists” tour at Tilles Center in Brookville in October.

Amy Suwannatat, a 6th grader at Weber Middle School, was among the pianists who performed in a master class, followed by a public performance.

The event, in part, aims to help young musicians celebrate their love of playing while collaborating with others, in what’s called “a unique social musical event with Lang Lang.”

For Amy and the other young musicians, the event will likely serve as a lifelong memory.

“To play piano with more than 1000 fingers together and with the star pianist Lang Lang in a master class and then performing might have been the most special event that I have ever took part in,” she told Patch.

“It is also another new experience because it’s more difficult to play with 100 people at the same tempo than to play as a soloist,” she added.

Amy enjoyed the event’s collaborative nature – and the chance to perform with Lang Lang, an icon in the music world.

“It took a lot of practice and definitely a lot of teamwork,” she pointed out. “To have the chance to learn and play with Lang Lang was such a great feeling because it felt like I was meeting someone who can change the world with music, which is exactly what my goal is to be when I grow up.”

And there were important take-aways.

“The master class was very helpful to me and to others as well since it trains us to look at a conductor while also looking at the music and your fingers,” Amy noted.

She says she’s grateful for the opportunity to take part in this event.

“I enjoyed this experience to perform and being with everybody. I would like to thank everyone for giving me this wonderful opportunity to be a part of this program,” Amy noted. “I would also like to give many thanks to my parents and teachers who have been supportive throughout my experience learning music.”
