PWUFSD Announces Anticipated Appointment of New Superintendent
PWUFSD BOE is happy to announce the anticipated appointment of Dr. Michael Hynes as the new superintendent of schools

Port Washington, N.Y. (May 2019)—After a five-month comprehensive search to appoint the next educational leader of Port Washington Union Free School District, Port Washington’s Board of Education is happy to announce the anticipated appointment of Dr. Michael Hynes as the new superintendent of schools effective July 15, 2019. Dr. Hynes is the current superintendent of the Patchogue-Medford Union Free School District.
Karen Sloan, president of the Port Washington School Board stated, “We would especially like to thank the Port Washington community and the faculty and staff of the Port Washington School District for their invaluable input in helping the Board prioritize the primary skill set, leadership approach and characteristics we looked for in selecting our new superintendent. We believe Dr. Hynes is a perfect fit for our district. His commitment to an educational philosophy built around educating the whole child and his reputation for community engagement will build and expand upon the wonderful foundation established by Dr. Kathleen Mooney.”
Dr. Hynes will bring over 20 distinguished years of experience in the field of education. Prior to Patchogue-Medford, Dr. Hynes was superintendent of the Shelter Island School District. He has also held the positions of assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, elementary and middle school principal, and elementary school teacher. Dr. Hynes holds a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Administration and Technology from Dowling College. He also holds a Master of Arts in Elementary Education from Dowling College and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Bethany College.

“I’m grateful and honored to join the Port Washington School District and I’m looking forward to reaching out and becoming more acquainted with the Port Washington faculty, parents and community members over the next 100 days,” said Dr. Michael Hynes. “The district’s reputation for educational excellence and innovation were primary motivators in my desire to come to Port Washington. I would also like to thank the Patchogue-Medford School District for the amazing opportunities they’ve afforded me.”
The district and Dr. Hynes are in the process of finalizing an employment agreement. After the agreement has been finalized and approved, such information will be made available. Over the next few months, Port Washington’s Board of Education will be working diligently with Dr. Mooney and Dr. Hynes to ensure a smooth transition for the 2019-20 school year.
