PWUFSD Hosts United States Marine Band for Classroom Instruction
Paul D. Schreiber Students Tune into Music Class with Musicians from the Presidents Own Marine Band

Port Washington, New York (November 2020)—Port Washington’s music department in Paul D. Schreiber High School welcomed distinguished members of “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band to gain knowledge in developing their musical skills through a series of virtual master classes. These classes offered students the opportunity to expand their musicianship in band and orchestra and understand the experiences of professional musicians.
“Our music program is extremely grateful for the opportunity to work with some of the exceptional musicians of the marine band. Our presenter discussed the importance of intonation and methods of using the tuner in helping us to play in tune,” said Shane Helfter, director of the Wind Ensemble. “The interaction of hearing her play the flute and then our students model her technique was extremely fun to watch. The students all came up to me afterwards asking if we can utilize some of the practice techniques our Marine instructor discussed. During times like these, these events are uplifting and help the students to see how powerful music can be!”
Throughout the series, students of various skill levels played an array of instruments and learned practical techniques to improve their skills. The guidance and insight from professional musicians were eye-opening, even through a virtual platform, as students were able to present questions to the Marine Band members to expand their musical knowledge beyond the classroom.
