Schreiber Senior's Artwork Selected for 2019 Peace Calendar

Artwork of Schreiber Senior Chosen for 13th Anniversary 2019 Peace Calendar

Port Washington, New York (December 2018)—The Port Washington Union Free School District (PWUFSD) is proud to announce that Joyce Chen, a senior at Paul D. Schreiber High School, has been named a winner for her artwork in the Shianti Fund’s 13th Anniversary 2019 Peace Calendar. The Shianti Fund, a Long Island based charitable organization, has committed to enlightenment and peace through education for more than 20 years.

This year, the organization’s peace theme is “Peace and Non-Violence.” Joyce’s artwork focuses on a quote from Mohandas Gandhi, an Indian activist who was the leader of the Indian independence movement. The quote compares the entirety of humanity to the enormity of the ocean—

a few bad people do not have a measurable impact on the entirety of humanity, nor do a few drops of dirty water taint the cleanliness of the ocean.

In addition to the publication, Joyce will also receive a $1,200 scholarship for her artistic efforts.

Whenever a PWUFSD student is acknowledged for artistic talent, it is important to recognize the outstanding mentorship and guidance provided by the district’s art teachers. With Joyce, a special call-out goes to art instructor Miranda Best. In promoting the arts and its importance to a well-rounded education, the district is grateful for the continued support of Schreiber’s building and central administrations, the Board of Education, and the greater Port Washington community.
