Schreiber Student Athletes Recognized for Academic Success

Only 28 high schools in New York State were named a Scholar/Athlete School of Distinction.

Paul D. Schreiber High School was among 28 high schools in New York State to earn the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s Scholar/Athlete School of Distinction Award for the 2014-15 school year.

This award is given to the schools whose varsity teams have all earned a cumulative GPA of 90 percent or higher.

Schreiber’s 18 varsity athletic teams have been named a Scholar/Athlete School of Distinction six times over the last seven years.

“We take great pride in the success of our athletes, on and off the playing field,” said Stephanie Joannon, director of health, physical education and athletics. “This award represents the dedicated effort that is put into the classroom. When coupled with hard work and success on the field, it brings true meaning to the term ‘scholar-athlete’ and exemplifies what the program is all about.”

This program was established during the 2002-03 school year by the NYSPHSAA to honor the schools that recognize the importance of academic success with their student-athletes.

The program also challenged varsity coaches to achieve a statewide honor in addition to the Scholar/Athlete Team Award, which began during the 1991-92 school year.
