"Summer Together" 2021 Served Record Number of Children

The scholarship program enabled 212 Port Washington children to participate in fun and enriching summer activities and camps

Summer Together is a volunteer-run program that funds summer camp scholarships for Port Washington families in need of economic assistance. Founded in 2018 by Long Island Together, Summer Together has enabled hundreds of Port children to share in fun and enriching summer activities with their peers.

In 2021, Summer Together served a record number of local children - 212 - enabling them to attend local day camps and special programs run by organizations such as the Parent Resource Center and ReWild.

Summer Together is possible because of tireless unpaid volunteers, a host of generous individual donations, as well as institutional grants from the Peter & Jeri Dejana Foundation and the Greentree Foundation Good Neighbor Fund. Summer Together is also grateful for the support of the Ellen and Richard Fox Charitable Trust, the St. Stephen's Church parish community, and the Daly School HSA.

Here is what that support made possible:

Summer Together worked with its community advisors (Parent Resource Center, Our Lady of Fatima, St. Peter's, and the Port Washington Public Library), as well as with some school guidance counselors, to identify and fund 105 boys and girls to attend at least one week of day camp. The participating camps - all in Port - were Bach To Rock, Blue Moon Project, Camp Invention, FAST Sports Camp at PAL, Language Anywhere, PYA, and Unlimited Sports Action. Thank you to these wonderful local camp partners!!!

Summer Together fully funded three community programs serving an additional 107 children:

Working with the school district for the second year, Summer Together funded a math enrichment program, “Building Math Muscles for Middle School,” for rising 6th graders identified as in need of academic intervention services as a result of the challenges of the last school year. The two-week intensive program was taught in August by district teachers and served 24 students.

Summer Together funded three high-school students to participate as interns in ReWild Long Island’s “Summer Program to Fight Hunger and Climate Change.” The goal of the program was to combat hunger and climate change by providing hands-on experience growing food and sustaining biodiversity in local parks, farms and preserves.

Summer Together funded the Parent Resource Center’s Summer Enrichment field trip program for its Outreach families. Approximately 80 pre-K children and family members participated in the trips

In addition, Summer Together is proud to announce that it worked with TONH Councilwoman Mariann Dalimonte to create a fee-reduction program for income-eligible families at Manorhaven and Whitney Pools. These families obtained a seasonal pass at a 60% reduced price, making the pool much more affordable for many local families.
