Update on Port Washington Officer Recovering From Serious Crash

"This decision is expected to allow Mike a quicker recovery and a brighter future," Port Washington PBA and the McNulty family said.

In a letter shared by the Port Washington PBA and the family of the officer who was seriously injured in the line of duty in January, Traffic Enforcement Safety Officer Michael McNulty made the decision on February 27 to allow officers to amputate his lower left leg.

It was determined he would never have normal use of his leg and would have to rely on crutches, a can or other forms of support.

“This decision is expected to allow Mike a quicker recovery and a brighter future,” the letter said.

The doctors believe McNulty will be able to return to an active lifestyle after rehabilitation and the fitment of a prosthesis.

McNulty has also been moved out of the ICU and into a private room, where he is slowly returning to himself, the update says.

McNulty was operating a motorcycle during a police escort to a hospital when the accident occurred on Saturday, Jan. 28. His injury required him to receive multiple blood transfusions.

The community has shown tremendous support for McNulty following his accident. During a community blood drive on February 20, some blood donors waited in line for up to two hours to donate. The drive collected over 250 pints of blood for donation.

The Port Washington PBA is collecting donations for the officer’s family to assist with future expenses. McNulty’s wife cannot return to work as she is constantly by his side in a hospital’s intensive care unit.
