'Word Detectives' At Shelter Rock Elementary School
Students in Cheryl Fritz's first grade class learned word-solving strategies in a special session.

Students in Cheryl Fritz’s first grade class at Shelter Rock Elementary in Manhasset became word detectives during a special classroom lesson. As part of the Word Detective Teachers College unit, students are learning different word-solving strategies.

The strategies include notice a problem and stop to solve it, look closely from start to end, use everything you know and do a slow check.
Principal Richard Roder and Mrs. Fritz presented each student with a word detective kit of their own. In the kits, students received official word detective badges, a bookmark with good habits for solving hard words tips, and a magnifying glass so students can do their best close reading.
