Crown Heights Fire Injures 2, FDNY Says

CROWN HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — Two people were injured in a blaze that sent black smoke billowing in the streets of Crown Heights, officials said.

The fire erupted on the fifth floor of an apartment building at 1920 Union St., near Portal Street, at about 11 a.m., according to an FDNY spokesperson.

Firefighters had the fire under control by 11:40 a.m. and two people were treated at the scene for minor injuries, the FDNY said.

The six-story apartment complex, owned by the Park Monroe II Rehab Housing Development Fund Corp., was named the worst building in then-Public Advocate Bill de Blasio's round-up of the city's worst landlords of 2013.

Department of Building records show the property has racked up 185 complaints and 22 open violations for failure to maintain the building's only elevator.
