New Coronavirus Testing Facilities Open In Brooklyn

The state-opened facilities in Flatbush and Brownsville aim to serve mostly-minority communities vulnerable to the outbreak.

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK — Brooklyn's communities among the hardest-hit by the coronavirus now have new chances to get tested.

New York state recently opened a drive-through testing facility in a Sears parking lot south of Prospect Park and soon will open a walk-in location in Brownsville.

Appointments for both sites can be made by calling 888-364-3065.

They're among five facilities Gov. Andrew Cuomo opened last week in mostly-minority communities in Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx.

People of color account for more than half the city's reported coronavirus deaths.

Brownsville's 11212 zip code has 863 confirmed coronavirus cases as of April 13, according to city data. The Sears parking lot facility at Beverley Road and Bedford Avenue sits in the 11226 zip code, where officials have logged 1,021 positive coronavirus cases.

Mayor Bill de Blasio on Sunday the city will also set up community testing facilities in East New York in Brooklyn, Morrisania in the Bronx, Harlem in Manhattan, Jamaica in Queens and the Vanderbilt Clinic on Staten Island.

The Brownsville site has yet to open as officials are still nailing down a location but is expected to open this week, according to the Brooklyn Paper.
