Woman Hit, Killed By Driver Fleeing Crash In Brooklyn: Cops

A Crown Heights man tried to flee a crash by driving the wrong way on East 55th Street and hit a woman crossing the street, police said.

BROOKLYN, NY — A Brooklyn driver was charged with manslaughter Wednesday after police said he hit and killed a woman when trying to flee a crash on East 55th Street.

Michael Rajpaul, 22, was arrested shortly after the fatal crash, which happened around 10:16 a.m. in East Flatbush, according to police.

He had been driving his Hyundai on East 55th Street when he hit a BMW and tried to drive away from the crash, police said.

Rajpaul started driving south on the one-way street, against traffic, and eventually hit another car and a 53-year-old woman who was crossing the street near Glenwood Road, police said.

Emergency responders found the woman unconscious in the roadway with serious injuries, police said. She was taken to Kings County Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Rajpaul, who lives in Crown Heights, was charged with manslaughter, assault and reckless driving.
