This is the second year in a row Benjamin and I have attended The East End Arts Council Community Mosaic Festival in our historic downtown Riverhead. I was blown away by the works of art created right before our very eyes. This an event I would recommend everyone attend in the future.
Ben and I invited our good friends Bob and Lisa to attend the fair with Lisa’s very artistic eleven year old daughter Jordan. We knew that an event like this one would be right up Jordan’s alley, and we were right. We started the day off at Star Confectionery, a small diner right on main street. This is a great place to stop for a bite to eat. As soon as you come in the owner and cook, Anthony, will make you feel like an old friend. The menu is simple and I have never ordered anything from there I did not like. They do a great breakfast with eggs, omelets, pancakes and french toast. Their lunch menu is has a wonderful array of salads, sandwiches and burgers. It has been in business since the early 1900s and are best known for their ice cream sodas. It is the perfect place to stop for a quick bite to eat.
After chowing down on our delicious breakfast we headed right outside to the festival. Crowds of people had already been hard at work on their mosaics. For $20 you were able to purchase your own piece of main street to paint. The East End Arts Council supplied you with a paint brush and a box of pastels from which to create your masterpiece. The works of art created on the pavement of our historic downtown were out of this world.
Our own little artist was busy at work and got a great deal of press for her artwork. We had a great time.
If you plan to attend the event next year we recommend you bring a few chairs, a cooler, and maybe an umbrella. It gets real warm on the pavement.
All in all we had a wonderful day.
Have a Wonderful Memorial Day,
- Jeannie Sargent
