The Mad Quilter Visits a Quilt Show

Suffolk Community College hosted this wonderful event

This past weekend Suffolk Community College in Riverhead hosted the Eastern Long Island Quilter’s Guild’s Annual Quilt Show. This event honored the 30th anniversary of the guild which has some of the most talented quilters in the world.

If you have read any of my previous posts you know how much I love to quilt and sew. Many times I have tried to encourage others to join this hobby and their response is something similar to “I can buy a blanket at the store”. A quilt may serve as a blanket but I can assure you that a homemade quilt is nothing like what you can buy at Macy’s or Home Goods despite many “blankets” claiming to be “quilts”.

A quilt is a work of art created from the deepest parts of ones soul. Just as the artist may use paint, plaster, pastels, or canvas the quilter works with fabric as a medium. Fabric is the paint of our hearts and the inspiration for each unique piece of artwork...Artwork, Quilts are a piece of art.

Every year I have attended this event it has been wonderful. I love all of the different quilts and styles represented throughout the show. It gives you a great appreciation for the skill that goes into making each of the quilts. My favorite part of this show in particular was the Apron challenge. There was an entire display of vintage aprons and modern twists. Unfortunately the battery in my camera did not last to take the pictures but they were simply amazing. Aprons are making a serious comeback ladies and gentlemen!

For more information on the Eastern Long Island Quilter’s Guild or if you are interested in learning to quilt please contact my favorite place in the world, my Mecca, Pieceful Quilting in Riverhead and speak to one of the girls. It will change your life.

Happy Quilting,

- Jeannie Sargent aka The Mad Quilter
