Small Space Gardens

Riverhead Free Library staff suggest books and programs to jump-start your spring gardening.

Many Riverhead residents live in apartments or condos and don’t have a lot of space for gardening.  Maybe they simply don’t have the time or money to spend on large gardening projects.  If that sounds like your life—Riverhead Free Library staff have some ideas for you!

Check out our “Small Space Gardens” display located opposite the new books.  Topics include container gardening, terrace gardens and more.   For example, if you like to make fresh Italian meals, you can grow all the veggies and herbs you need in containers.  Tomatoes, peppers and zucchini all fit in large pots, and you can tuck in thyme, basil, chives and parsley around the edges.  Check out Crops in Pots by Bob Purnell for some great suggestions.

While you’re at it, sign up for the Library’s program, Back to Basics, in which a local farmer demonstrates how to cook local seasonal food.  If you have children, consider signing them up for Your Edible Garden or Your Family Garden, so they can also participate in your family gardening experience.
